The Power of Their Ideas: Transformative Student-Led Discussion Methods
In this session, participants will learn strategies and methods to improve the quality of classroom discussion. Participants will gain both pedagogy and praxis in this session as they learn to trust their students with class discussions for any content area or subject.
Session Objectives:
- Participants will reflect critically on the role of student voice and leadership in their classrooms.
- Participants will discover new approaches, both in terms of philosophy and practice, to activate student voice in classroom discussions.
Presenter: Gerardo A. Muñoz is the 2021 Colorado Teacher of the Year, Producer and co-host of the podcast Too Dope Teachers and a Mic, and a doctoral student at the University of Denver. He has been a middle and high school teacher for twenty-two years in Denver Public Schools, the last fifteen at the Denver Center for International Studies. He is mostly interested in classrooms that are centered by students, powered by teachers, and safe spaces for creativity and identity exploration. In this session, teachers will learn some basics of hip hop pedagogy, identity texts, creative self-expression and loving the game.
