Approaching Education for Engagement

Educators know that currently, the struggle is real. Real for them, real for their students.  Is it possible to reimagine a school day where folks will actually want to belong?

We humbly think yes, yes there is. We consider project-based learning (PBL) an approach that organically includes, fosters and sustains the important competencies of social and emotional learning (SEL) in a culturally relevant way.  Project-based learning often involves real-world problems or issues, which can provide opportunities for students to develop empathy and perspective-taking skills as they consider the needs and perspectives of others, a cornerstone of culturally responsive education.

Importantly, the structure of PBL can hasten the development of positive relationships - student to student and student to teacher - a hallmark of healthy school culture.  Both PBL and SEL prioritize the development of positive relationships, thus creating a supportive learning environment where students and educators feel valued, respected, and connected.

PBL is solution focused.  Throughout the process, students are encouraged to think creatively and innovatively to solve complex problems, which can help to develop SEL skills such as risk-taking, resilience, and adaptability.

Finally, PBL also develops Self awareness, Self management and Social skills, specifically communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution

Can you see the symbiotic relationship between these two learning paths? The only way PBL can truly flourish is by highlighting the human skills of SEL thereby creating a well-rounded educational experience that not only develops students' academic skills but also the whole child..
