The School Avoidant Child: A Collaborative Approach to Fostering Change

Special Education

School avoidance is a significant challenge facing today's schools. ?This workshop will discuss etiology and collaborative intervention, with school staff as key players in fostering positive change. ?We will reinforce the understanding that all learners are individuals, each with their own learning styles and characteristics.

In this session you will:

  • examine the importance of fostering a safe, inclusive learning environment for all students so that they may feel comfortable and free to participate in school;
  • discuss the importance of identifying the function of behaviors associated with school avoidance and anxiety;
  • examine and identify potential intervention to appropriately address related behaviors; and
  • foster an understanding of the importance of professional reflection to continually ask, "What might I do differently in order to help this child?"

Essential questions to be addressed include: What is school avoidance? What is at the root of the increases in cases of students avoiding school? What are the avenues in which school avoidance can be addressed? What interventions may prove helpful in addressing school avoidant behaviors? What role does the application of the principles of applied behavior analysis play in addressing school avoidant behaviors? What is the role of school staff in addressing school avoidance and associated behaviors? Resources will be shared with participants to assist in understanding the function of behaviors associated with school avoidance, to assist in accessing community-based supports, and to foster a sustainable plan to address school avoidance in individual students.
