Honey bees are amazing little creatures with superpowers that impact humans and ecosystems.  Join Paul Timm as he explores the amazing world of honey bees and helps guide teachers through the building and facilitation of honey bee scavenger hunts using Google Earth. You’ll see curiosity soar as your students learn to interpret the mysteries of honey bee dance language and discover the locations of nectar, pollen, and water as they play the roles of worker honey bees at your school.

Session Objectives: 

  • Demonstrate the importance of Honey Bees to the Ecosystem & Economy.

  • Learn to interpret the dance language of honey bees used in communicating locations of colony resources.

  • Create materials for turning students into honey bees and facilitating a honey bee resource scavenger hunt with students.


Presenter: Paul Timm is a 7-12 science instructor from Lyons-Decatur Northeast Public Schools in Lyons, Nebraska. He holds three teaching endorsements in Biology, Agriculture Education, and Health Sciences Education, with a B.S. in Agricultural Education and a M.S. in Entomology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Paul loves the teachable moment and brainstorming how technology can be used to produce and enhance learning opportunities, especially through collaborative efforts between school districts both within the state of Nebraska and around the world.
