SEL for Self-Regulation - Considering All the Competencies

Session 2 of the 2020-2021 TMI-ENVISION SEL Series:

Fostering Safer Learning Spaces to Improve Academic, Social and Emotional Development

Currently, Mindful Practices are ubiquitous in the schoolhouse - and with good reason. Although more research needs to be completed, the early data points to positive impacts on students’ well-being as well as academic achievement.  That’s the good news.   The bad news is that oft times, Mindfulness is a collection of activities in which classrooms engage, without a grounding structure.  Move one or two of the people in the schoolhouse and the “program” begins to unravel. Join us and align SEL and Mindful practices into your content.

In this session, participants will learn how to:

  • use the NJDOE SEL competencies and sub-competencies to guide and instill Mindful practices;
  • elicit appropriate neurotransmitters for happy, productive student engagement;
  • get students to evaluate their own social and self awareness with the CPR chart Stop, Drop and Breathe; and
  • incorporate movement into content.

About the TMI-ENVISION Social Emotional Learning Series:

Fostering Safer Learning Spaces to Improve Academic, Social and Emotional Development

The TMI-ENVISION wildly popular SEL series has returned, even more grounded for application due to the feedback from the hundreds of educators who have attended this series over the past few years.

Plan to attend them all or just one - the choice is yours.  While each session is designed to stand alone, the effectiveness increases when you attend them all. This work is based on the NJ DOE Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies & sub-competencies, the work of CASEL, EASEL Lab and Wallace, as well as the PSEL standards.

SEL in our classrooms and schools is one of the positive supports for the Trauma that many have experienced or are experiencing. Mindful practices are one of the SEL tools that are evidenced-based in helping victims of trauma cope.

To foster safe learning spaces, many schools are shifting their attention to the promotion of pro-social behaviors in their classrooms. Undeniably, SEL and academic development are interconnected and central to the learning process. SEL not only prepares students to be able to participate in learning experiences, it also increases students’ capacities to learn.

All sessions are lively, experiential and fun - and a series model lets us do a deeper dive into what it takes.  Each session has time set aside to plan for implementation.
