SEL and Conflict Resolution: A Focus on Relationship Skills (No Cost for TMI PLC Members)

SEL and Conflict Resolution: A Focus on Relationship Skills

Session 3 (of 3) of the TMI/Envision Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Institute 2019-2020

Conflict is a natural part of life. When we learn and practice conflict resolution, we become better problem solvers.

Conflict resolution is an antidote to bullying. Surveyed students share frustration with the amount of attention placed on negative behaviors.  Their solution is to teach students ways in which they can deal with those behaviors.  And…when we listen to our students, they will tell us, “Kindness is the key for safer schools.”

School safety teams that value social justice reduce exclusionary practices. By fostering positive social and emotional learning for students, student misconduct is addressed in a positive, fair and unbiased manner.

This session addresses NJDOE SEL sub-competencies as well as the NJ Career Ready Practices.  Attend this session to:

  • Strategize how to tap into the “parts” of of students that are empowering to support the “parts” that aren’t. (Strength-based)
  • Establish “recovery” spaces
  • Review the concepts of conflict resolution
  • Practice a problem solving process
  • Use a conflict resolution model
  • Practice the language of respect
