SEL and Conflict Resolution - A Deep Dive into Relationship Skills

Session 2 of the 2020-2021 TMI-ENVISION SEL Series:

Fostering Safer Learning Spaces to Improve Academic, Social and Emotional Development

Conflict is a natural part of life. When we learn and practice conflict resolution, we become better problem solvers. When establishing and maintaining a culture of equity and excellence, school safety teams  develop and implement strategies and interventions that address student misconduct in a positive, fair and unbiased manner. Educators who value social justice establish schools that reduce exclusionary practices and foster positive social and emotional learning for students. (PSEL #3) Conflict resolution is an antidote to bullying.   Many students express that they are frustrated with the amount of attention being placed on the negative behaviors, instead of teaching students ways in which they could deal with those behaviors. And…when we listen to our students, they will tell you, “Kindness is the key for safer schools.”

This session addresses NJDOE SEL sub-competencies as well as the NJ Career Ready Practices.  Attend this session to:

  • strategize how to tap into the “parts” of students that are empowering to support the “parts” that aren’t (Strength-based);
  • establish “recovery” spaces;
  • review the concepts of conflict resolution;
  • practice a problem solving process;
  • use a conflict resolution model; and
  • practice the language of respect.

About the TMI-ENVISION Social Emotional Learning Series:

Fostering Safer Learning Spaces to Improve Academic, Social and Emotional Development

The TMI-ENVISION wildly popular SEL series has returned, even more grounded for application due to the feedback from the hundreds of educators who have attended this series over the past few years.

Plan to attend them all or just one - the choice is yours.  While each session is designed to stand alone, the awesomeness increases when you attend them all. This work is based on the NJ DOE Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies & sub-competencies, the work of CASEL, EASEL Lab and Wallace, as well as the PSEL standards.

SEL in our classrooms and schools is one of the positive supports for the Trauma that many have experienced or are experiencing. Mindful practices are one of the SEL tools that are evidenced-based in helping victims of trauma cope.

To foster safe learning spaces, many schools are shifting their attention to the promotion of pro-social behaviors in their classrooms. Undeniably, SEL and academic development are interconnected and central to the learning process. SEL not only prepares students to be able to participate in learning experiences, it also increases students’ capacity to learn.

All sessions are lively, experiential and fun - and a series model lets us do a deeper dive into what it takes.  Each session has time set aside to plan for implementation.
