Mindful Practices for Those Who Give the Most: Educators!

Session 1 of the TMI/ENVISION Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Institute 2019-2020

Consider sending your teachers to this workshop as recognition and celebration for their efforts all school year!

Public Educators may be the most sacrificial professionals. Educators give until they have zero left to give - and then they give some more. A recent Gallup Poll finds 46% of teachers report high daily stress during the school year. That’s tied with nurses for the highest rate among all occupational groups.

The bad news: High levels of stress affect teacher health and well-being.  Teacher burnout, job dissatisfaction, poor performance, and turnover rates are at record highs.

The good news: SEL/Mindfulness programs for teachers lead to improved health by reducing anxiety and depression.  In addition, they help teachers develop coping and awareness skills.  Recent research from the Curry School of Education, U of Va, suggest that we expand the focus of professional development to include personal development . In a study of of 234 teachers, representing K-12, they found that:
“Teachers who regularly use stress-reducing strategies increase their abilities to cope with the demands of the career and are positioned to do a better job educating students.”

More good news: If your district is moving forward with a SEL initiative, taking care of your staff is step #1.  Teachers who can respond rather than react model appropriate behaviors for students.

Participants will learn:

  • mindfulness/stress reduction practices to promote self-regulation of attention;
  • non-judgmental awareness;
  • how to develop a personal mindfulness practice (which is necessary to be a mindful teacher which is necessary to teach mindfulness!); and
  • how to maximize the space between stimulus and response.
