Laying the Foundation for STEAM Thinking: The Early Years (No Cost for TMI Consortium Members)

Laying the Foundation for STEAM Thinking: The Early Years

Is your elementary school a dynamic, child-centered school that focuses on “thinking outside the box” and fostering creativity and originality of thought?  Does your school promote innovative, problem-based curriculum and instruction that require the students to use higher level thinking in science, technology, math, and the arts to solve problems both individually and collaboratively? This workshop will focus on how to: 1) utilize school traditions to design a curriculum and an instructional approach that meets the needs of 21st century learners, by reworking successful programs and finding, developing, and supporting a common vision; and 2) embrace the latest ideas in creative education, including maker spaces, hacking, Google, and more. Specifically, participants will gain practical examples and related strategies for:

  • building STEAM-based programs, influenced by an innovative vision built upon the very best aspects of NASA as an over-riding philosophy; and
  • integrating the best ideas from the maker movement (and more) to support STEAM in meaningful ways.

Practical ideas, steps, and solutions will be shared along with the pitfalls and mistakes to avoid in this new and important venture! This workshop is dynamic, engaging, fun, and will energize, while providing meaningful tools to bring back to your school.
