ALBA Teaching Institute: Fascism and Anti-fascism: From the Spanish Civil War to Today

Facilitated by prominent Historian and Stanford University Professor, Dr. Peter Carroll and Dr. Sebastiaan Faber, Professor of Hispanic Studies at Oberlin College!

This one-day seminar addresses political activism, international relations, and human rights through the use of primary-source materials, focusing specifically on the American volunteers in the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s, known collectively as The Abraham Lincoln Brigade.

The goal of the workshop is to develop compelling lesson plans using the historic records left by the volunteers of the Lincoln Brigade. The archives of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, housed within the Tamiment Library at NYU, include thousands of personal letters, photographs, posters and other original materials from participants in the Spanish Civil War. Materials from this unique collection offer a special opportunity for high school teachers to introduce their students to the use of primary-source materials, and to think about the relationship of war to American society and culture, and the role of the United States in the world. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn from leading experts on the history and culture of the Spanish Civil War, to become familiar with the resources available at ALBA, and be provided with time to develop lessons and/or units that incorporate the various primary resources into subject- and grade-level-specific lesson plans aligned to the NJSLS.

The Spanish Civil War is a crucial event in twentieth-century world and U.S. history, and key for understanding the origins of World War II and the Holocaust. As a topic, it offers a unique opportunity to introduce major historical, political, and cultural issues. It also provides a framework for students to understand how political ideas and ideals shape people’s lives, moving them to make difficult and sometimes dangerous choices. Teaching the Spanish Civil War allows teachers and students to address essential questions: Why should we care about events that happen far away, or that happened a long time ago? How do we decide who is on the right side of an armed conflict? When do we stand up for what we believe in? How do images and texts shape our view of the world—and how can we use them to shape others’ views?

 Practical resources will be provided!
