ENVISION: PARA-Power! (No Cost for TMI PLC Members)

An offering of the TMI/Envision Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Series

Para-educators are an essential part of the special education team.  They deliver individualized services and play an increasingly prominent role in the support of instruction of individuals with exceptionalities at all ages (Giangreco, Suter, & Doyle, 2010).

Paras need to be recognized and supported as they continue to make countless lives better. Paras often see things that teachers can’t.  They know the students in a different way, having tight relationships with the students who need adult support most.  And, it is always good to remember, paras often do the hardest jobs with the toughest students, and they do it for the least amount of money.

To be competent in their job, Paras must have knowledge, skills, and abilities to do all that is expected and required.  Paras, like all educators, need and generally want professional development.  Savvy leaders recognize Para’s needs and find funding to support them.

Send your Paras or perhaps send them with their Co-teaching team. The focus of this session will be on:

  • Ability to use strategies that promote students’ independence
  • Understanding of ethical and confidential considerations
  • Ability to employ constructive and clear communication strategies
  • Specific ways to resolve conflicts
  • Awareness of one’s impact on the overall learning environment

Audience: All PK-12 Teachers and Administrators
Instructor: Sharon McCarthy, EnVision President and TMI Lead Consultant
Location: Ramapo College of NJ; Trustees Pavilion - Room 1
