Yoga and Other Mindfulness Tools in the Classroom

Would you like to try yoga in your classroom? Have you tried it and would like to learn more? This workshop will address methods and benefits of using mindful yoga in the classroom in support of emotional and cognitive development. Methods will cover K-12 hands-on approaches in parallel workshops for teachers. Discover the research that supports the academic and emotional benefits of Yoga in the classroom.

This workshop is appropriate for K-12 classroom teachers, administrators, special educators, school counselors, school social workers, occupational therapists, SLPs, physical therapists, physical education teachers, health educators, and paraprofessionals.

Participants will:

  • Understand the neuroscience of stress, and its effects learning and behavior
  • Understand the neurology of yoga and mindfulness and its benefits
  • Learn about recent studies to use as evidence in promoting yoga in the
    classroom
  • Leave with simple yoga and mindfulness techniques to support self –
    regulation, developing compassion, and cognitive development at the
    various grade levels
  • Facilitate learning readiness which improves student achievement
  • Improve the climate of your classroom
  • Develop techniques to be present for your students

About the Presenters...

Carol Bowman

Carol Bonilla Bowman, Ed.D., Associate Professor of Education at Ramapo College of New Jersey, holds a doctorate in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her specialties include elementary education, portfolio assessment, bilingual education, and mindful education. She is the Associate Director of the Krame Center for Contemplative Studies and Mindful Living and Director of Yoga Programs at Ramapo. She was trained at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School to teach Mind Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Her training to teach .b mindfulness curriculum to middle and high school students was completed in July 2015. A yoga practitioner most of her life and a yoga teacher for the last 10 years, her practice has expanded to include a variety of contemplative practices of Zen and Tibetan Buddhism.

Joe Kiely

Joseph Kiely (Ramapo ’10) is an English teacher and theater director at Northern Highlands Regional High School, where he has been a member of the Wellness PLC for several years. He also developed and currently facilitates a”Mindful Teacher, Mindful Students, Mindful Classroom” PD workshop there. Since 2014, Joe has collaborated with the Krame Center, where he was a member of the mindful teacher fellowship, and has co-presented at the Introduction to Mindfulness for Educators and Administrators workshop for several years.
