Implementing a Design Thinking Elective Course  for the High School:

A Powerful Approach to Promoting Creative and Innovative Thinking

How will our students be able to solve complex, unpredictable problems? Creativity and innovative thinking are extremely important, universally valued skills that are essential to a 21st century education.  Our students will be challenged to develop creative solutions to complex problems across all fields of work in a rapidly changing society.

How might schools significantly foster these essential, higher level competitive skills? In considering that question, the Ramsey School District, Ramsey, New Jersey, looked to the Stanford University d. school graduate course on design thinking as one very promising curriculum for fostering these essential skills and dispositions (see, https://dschool.stanford.edu/).  Over a three-year period, the district designed and piloted an elective course at the high school, modeled after the d.school program.  The students were trained in human centered design methodology, partnered with a company or social organization, and challenged to solve a complex, messy real-world problem.  The elective for juniors and seniors produced a very high level of outcomes including creative confidence, empathy, critical thinking, risk-taking, advanced collaboration and communication, and the understandings associated with breakthrough innovation (see, http://www.designkit.org/mindsets).  Partnerships included American Express, Boxed Wholesale, All Things Media, the Liberty Science Center, Crisis Text Line, and The Center for Social Innovation.

This 2.5 hour session will provide a comprehensive overview of design thinking methodology and how to establish a course on design thinking at the high school level. It will present course objectives and outcomes, assessment materials, and day-to-day lessons. It will give guidelines for establishing partnerships and explain the teacher training that is needed. The presentation will share “lessons learned” from the three-year pilot, highlights and achievements, and feedback from students, teachers, and administrators who have participated in the program. TMI will provide a framework and timeline for establishing and implementing a course on design thinking for the 2019-20 school year.  Audience: High school-level administrators responsible for curriculum/instructional programming, design and implementation.
